YouTube Gets ‘Breaking News’ Feature

YouTube, the video hub of the web where 300 hours of video are uploaded every minute, is considered an important source of information.

It is often the first place to look for when searching live footage of breaking news. Most of these videos are shot using mobile phones.
Given this fact, YouTube is hoping to better leverage its capabilities as a news source.

‘Breaking News’ Carousel

Google is testing a new feature to instantly update its users with current news. It now has a scrollable ‘Breaking News’ carousel on its homepage and in its mobile apps.
The feature appears as a recommended channel on YouTube’s homepage and as a carousel of cards on the mobile app.

YouTube’s Mechanism for News Update

When the feature was first launched, it was filled with videos regarding the Barcelona Terror Attack noted the Android Police. Later in the day it contained reports regarding former White House strategist Steve Bannon leaving his position with Donald Trump’s administration.
It is unclear, as of now, if YouTube is rolling out news algorithmically or if its based on some calculation. We still have to see if it will appear at all times or just during breaking news cycles.
Regardless, staying up to date with the news is now easier than ever thanks to the new section. Its certainly a major step up compared to the recommended videos on YouTube.
The added feature may be an attempt to make YouTube more of a real-time news platform, much like its rivals Twitter and Facebook with their own recent news sections.
